Perfect opening
Bulgaria showed the importance of a good start in their qualifying group as three straight wins in their opening games set them on course for triumph in Group 8.By no means the favourites in a pool also containing Belgium and Croatia, Bulgaria were given confidence ahead of their opener in Brussels by drawing 2-2 with World Cup finalists Germany in an August friendly. The next month Bulgaria won 2-0 against the Belgians, Zoran Jankovic and Stilian Petrov scoring in each half.

Home wins
October saw a home double-header for Plamen Markov's team. They started by beating Croatia 2-0, Stilian Petrov and Dimitar Berbatov scoring in a 15-minute first-half spell. Surprisingly, Andorra gave them a tougher game four days later, but despite Berbatov's absence through injury, Gueorgui Chilikov and Krassimir Balakov were on target before Antonio Lima's late goal pulled the score back to 2-1.
Bulgaria ended 2002 three points clear of Belgium, and although November saw a 1-0 friendly defeat in Spain, the last week of March brought happy news as they won 2-1 in Serbia and Montenegro in a warm-up game and were helped as struggling Croatia beat Belgium 4-0. April began with a frustrating 0-0 draw in freezing Estonia, but Croatia's simultaneous 2-0 win against Andorra still left Bulgaria three points ahead.

Mixed fortune
After beating Albania in a late April friendly, Bulgaria were held again in June, as they needed to equalise twice through Petrov and a Svetoslav Todorov penalty to draw 2-2 at home against Belgium. Four days later Belgium beat Andorra 3-0 and Croatia overcame Estonia 1-0. Bulgaria were now just a point ahead of Croatia, with only three games left.
However, the 2003/04 season began with Bulgaria rediscovering the form of the previous autumn, as in August they cruised to a 3-0 friendly triumph against Lithuania and on 6 September, Martin Petrov and Berbatov scored to see off Estonia 2-0. They travelled to Andorra four days later knowing victory combined with defeat for Croatia in Belgium would take them to Portugal.

Qualification sealed
Berbatov's early double and Marian Hristov's second-half strike ensured Bulgaria's end of the bargain had been kept, and Belgium's 2-1 win ensured that a 1-0 defeat in their final qualifier Croatia was academic for Markov's side.
