Denmark approached the Euro 2004 qualifying competition on a low note. Having successfully reached the 2002 World Cup finishing top of a demanding first-round group which included the holders France - who they defeated 2-0 in their final group match - Morten Olsen's team then suffered a heavy 3-0 loss to England in the second round.

Strong Start
However, the Nordic nation made a strong start to the European Championship qualifying campaign, drawing 2-2 away in Norway. It might have been even better for Olsen's side, as they twice led through Jon Dahl Tomasson only for Norwegian striker John Carew to salvage a draw with an equalising goal two minutes into added time.
Goals from Tomasson and Ebbe Sand secured a 2-0 victory against Luxembourg in Denmark's second game, before an extraordinary match in Bucharest against Romania. Trailing 1-0 and 2-1 and under pressure for long periods of the game, two goals from Dennis Rommedahl, and one each from Thomas Gravesen, Tomasson and a Cosmin Contra own goal secured a remarkable 5-2 win for the visitors. However, they slipped to a surprise 2-0 defeat at home by Bosnia-Herzegovina four days later, a result which threw the group wide open.

Pole position
That result made the home game with Norway even more crucial, and in the event Jesper Grønkjær's early strike proved enough to give Denmark a vital victory that moved them to the top of the table. Goals from Claus Jensen and Gravesen then secured another 2-0 win away to Luxembourg, which opened up a two-point lead over Norway at the head of the standings and put Denmark in pole position to qualify.
An equaliser in the fifth minute of added time from Martin Laursen earned Denmark a 2-2 draw at home to Romania, who had fallen behind to Tomasson's penalty only to draw level and then take the lead through strikes from Adrian Mutu and Daniel Pancu.

Decisive point
That meant Denmark needed just a draw in Bosnia-Herzegovina to book their place in Portugal and they achieved the required point, when Martin Jørgensen scored in a 1-1 draw that ensured the Danes automatic qualification.
