ENGLAND

  • England advanced to the quarter-finals of UEFA EURO 2004™ before losing on penalties to Portugal after the sides had shared four goals.
• They bounced back from a 2-1 defeat to France in their opening match in the final tournament group stage to defeat Switzerland (3-0) and Croatia (4-2) before losing out to the hosts in the knockout stage.
• England qualified for the final tournament by topping their qualification group with six wins and two draws from their eight engagements. Their dropped points came in draws at home to FYR Macedonia (2-2) and away to group runners-up Turkey (0-0).

What is their best performance in the UEFA European Championship?
• Both of England's semi-final appearances to date in the competition have ended in defeat.
• Their first appearance in the last four of the competition came in 1968 when they lost 1-0 to Yugoslavia in Florence.
• More recently, as tournament hosts, England advanced to the semis of EURO ‘96™ before losing out on penalties to eventual winners, Germany, after the two sides battled out a 1-1 draw.

Key facts
• Prior to their defeat by Northern Ireland in the 2006 FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign, England had not lost a qualifying round game under Sven-Göran Eriksson. To that point, England's 22-match record had yielded 17 victories and five draws. Their previous defeat came on 7 October 2000 when, with Kevin Keegan at the helm, they lost 1-0 at home against Germany in 2002 FIFA World Cup qualifying action.
• England's last home defeat in UEFA European Championship qualifying round action came against Denmark on 21 September 1983 thanks to Allan Simonsen's 36th-minute penalty. Since then, England have played 12 qualification round matches on home soil with eight victories and four draws.
• They did, however, lose a final tournament play-off match to Scotland on 17 November 1999 and ended up on the losing side on penalties to Germany in their EURO '96 semi-final.

All-time record
• During the qualifying round for UEFA EURO 2008™, England will pass the 100-match record in terms of games played in the UEFA European Championship. Up until the start of UEFA EURO 2008™ qualifying, they had played 93 matches with 51 wins, 26 draws, 16 losses, 180 goals scored and 71 conceded.
• Their record victory in the competition is a 9-0 defeat of Luxembourg on 15 December 1982 with Luther Blissett grabbing a hat-trick.
• England have lost only one game by a three-goal margin in that time. That came on 27 February 1963 when France recorded a 5-2 home win with Lucien Cossou on target twice in the 1964 UEFA European Championship preliminary round.
• England have participated in the last five UEFA European Championship final tournaments having first qualified for the finals in 1968.
